Dahlias that do not begin infected with a virus can certainly get virus later, through exposure to other plants, bugs that feed on an infected plant and then feed on your plant, or if you cut flowers and don’t sanitize your clippers between plants. Learn more about what to use to sanitize your clippers between cuts.

What is a dahlia tissue culture cutting?

In tissue culture, horticulturists grow new plants from a small piece of plant tissue in a controlled, sterile environment. They place the plant tissue in a special jelly-like substance that provides it with nutrients and hormones, which help it grow into a new plant. This technique enables the quick production of many identical plants, aiding in the creation of disease-free plants or the replication of rare or valuable plants.

How is a cutting different or better than a tuber?

There are four ways you can grow a dahlia, from a tuber, from a seed, from a cutting and from tissue culture. All these methods, except growing from seed, will provide you with the same type of flower as the parent. A regular cutting is taken from a tuber or a growing plant. A tissue culture cutting is grown from plant cells in a lab. A tuber was grown in the ground and likely divided.

What’s “best” depends on your personal preferences and experience. If you are working toward cleaner stock, then tissue culture cuttings that have been cleaned and tested for virus are a good start. If you want to make a bunch of plants, a tuber can be useful to take multiple cuttings from. Tubers can be a little tricky for some because in certain conditions they’ll rot, whereas cuttings can survive some of the moist conditions that would rot a tuber. Really there is no “best.” There are just different ways of growing that will work for different folks and their growing conditions.

How much will Hapet Old Charm cuttings cost?

We expect to charge $35 for each Hapet Old Charm cutting.

How many can I buy? We’ve grown the dahlias ourselves for a year to confirm the cultivar, invested in the lab work needed to test for virus, clear the virus, and grow the cuttings in a greenhouse. All these steps require time, resources, expertise, and space. That being said, there are many less expensive cultivars for sale. If this one is too expensive, we appreciate the sharing and giving nature of the dahlia community. Hopefully, those who buy cuttings this year will share tubers next year.

Will the Hapet Old Charm cuttings make tubers?

Given the right time and conditions, the Hapet Old Charm cuttings should grow tubers in the first year. Every garden is different, so there are cases where a cutting may not create tubers. We’ve seen many variables such as soil nutrition, grow bags vs in-ground growing etc. hinder or help the creation of tubers. Plus there is always variation in the number of tubers a cultivar naturally tends to create. We’ve found that Hapet Old Charm is a light tuber producer in our garden.

The origins of Hapet Old Charm

The Hapet Old Charm dahlia cultivar was bred by Peter Haslhofer & Theresia Dietl in Austria.
